List of the original source material for all Oscar-winning adapted screenplays. From Gone with the Wind to 12 Years a Slave, movies based on books have been among the most popular at the Academy Awards. Each year, the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay is awarded to the writer of a screenplay adaptation from another source. Most eligible screenplays are adapted from novels or books, but many also come from plays, short stories, TV teleplays, newspaper or magazine articles, and even other films. In fact, the screenplay for any movie sequel is considered an adaptation, as the sequel was based on the original story. And Francis Ford Coppola and Mario Puzo were awarded this award for both The Godfather (1972) and The Godfather Part II (1974), both based on the same novel. How many of these novels, non-fiction books, and short stories have you read? Have you seen any of the plays that were made into films? Tell us what you think in the comments.
